Emma and Clare on Their HYROX Group Trip To Club La Santa!
Emma Kirk-Odunubi, sports scientist, running coach and HYROX ambassador, shared with us her experience hosting a seven-day HYROX group training camp at Club La Santa with her partner Clare Rafferty! What started as Clare dragging Emma into her first HYROX competition has now become a full-blown passion – there’s no stopping them as they elevate their training sessions in Lanzarote.

What was your experience like hosting a group training camp at Club La Santa?
“So firstly, fun, all the fun. It was great. We went for seven days and from deciding to run the camp through to getting there was so seamless, Hayley in the back end of the team was just amazing helping us with the booking and setting it up, and then knowing where to meet everyone, get pickups, transfers, everything was just really seamless. Then once we got there we kind of created the schedule. They helped us put it together, utilize different facilities and we also had a private session as well where one of the Green Teamers took yoga which was amazing. We had a full kind of mix and loved every second of it.”
How did you find Club La Santa as a training destination for HYROX and running?
“Loved it! I can’t think of anywhere else that has the facilities that Club La Santa has, along with the ease of movement everywhere. What was so great was that we had certain areas where we’d always meet each other, and there was a group of 16 of us. Everyone would come in we meet either at breakfast in the morning, or we’d meet at the buffet, or you then got lovely cute coffee shops where you can go – in terms of facilities it was great. We were able to book specific things for our group, but also in the same breath just they had access to the app. So when we hadn’t got our structured sessions in, there were days when they had the afternoon to themselves and they went free for all and did paddle boarding and all of that stuff. We did that with them too, which was amazing. It was really good fun.”

“And then just the availability of options for dinner and food as well at Club La Santa, there are multiple options. It was just very easy. And then I think from a running perspective, I was going into Chicago marathon training and I was four or five weeks out when we went. So I was doing some of my peak miles, and able to, run into the local village and the running trails, but also the amazing running track and the laps that are around Club La Santa where you can just do your sessions around the venue, which is amazing.”
Which activities did you take part in during your trip here with Clare prior to your training camp?
“We did so much – the pilates reformer beds were great and it was really cool to be able to do that, we just didn’t expect to be able to do it. Clare did a couple of swimming lessons at the time training up to do a half IRONMAN. So she did a swimming lesson a day, which was great that it was all included as well. The CrossFit classes were awesome, and just being able to lift outside in the warmth was amazing, especially coming from the UK. We did padel which was amazing, it was the first time we had tried it and was one of the most fun things I’ve ever done – now I’m obsessed. So every time we go back, I’m like, “Book padel!”. We did a little bit of cycling, a little bit of tennis as well and the mini golf was fun – you can do it in the evenings which is great. Even though we were there for 10 days, there was so much more we could have done.”

Do you have any plans to come back to CLS to hold another training camp?
“We’ve just secured some room for potentially October this year for a set week. We’re in talks with all the people that have said to us that they want to come. We’re very excited and looking potentially to even double the numbers that we had last year, which is nuts, it just shows you how obsessed with the venue that all the people that came last year were, they have been knocking on our door literally, since they came back asking “When’s the next one? Where’s the next one coming?”, it’s coming. So we’re coming back in October, and then we’ve even considered maybe going for Christmas, because why not – fun and running and training!
